Sofia City Council voted to remove the Soviet Army monument from the city center and called for a solution to fill the empty space that will be left after the removal of the monument.

41 MPs voted for removing the monument, 14 were against, and one abstained, reported the Bulgarian Radio website.

The city council tasked the mayor of Sofia, Yordanka Fandukova, to ask the state authorities to respect this decision, in accordance with all valid procedures, to move the monument to the museum of socialist art or to a suitable location outside the city.

During the voting, there was also a protest in front of the city council building, because there were citizens who did not want the monument to be moved.
